Former Aldershot striker Scott Rendell was on target as Torquay dented the Shots' play-off hopes with a surprise 2-0 away win.
Rendell and Elliot Benyon struck in the first half to give the Gulls their third win in four and ease their relegation fears.
Torquay are now nine points clear of second-bottom Grimsby with four games left while Aldershot are seventh after their six-match unbeaten run came to an end.
It was the hosts that started at a high tempo with Louie Soares stinging the hands of Torquay keeper Michael Poke inside the first minute.
But the Gulls gradually took a grip on the contest and Benyon drilled home his 14th goal of the season in the 17th minute after shrugging off Aaron Brown.
Shortly afterwards, keeper Jamie Young palmed a Kevin Nicholson free-kick onto the bar as Torquay took control.
And their dominance was rewarded after 36 minutes when Rendell bundled home his 12th of the campaign after a Chris Zebroski cross caused confusion in the Shots' box.
Town boss Kevin Dillon threw on all three substitutes but the home side failed to carve out any clear-cut opportunities, with Rendell going close again late on.
