Goalkeeper Vicente Guaita was his side's hero as 10-man Getafe left Athletic Bilbao with a hard-earned point.
Promoted Getafe played the final 24 minutes with a numerical disadvantage after midfielder Alvaro Jimenez had been sent off for a second bookable offence, but they might even have emerged with all three points had it not been for Kepa Arrizabalaga's save from Markel Bergara's early header.
Bilbao made much of the running in the first half with Inigo Lekue and Iker Muniain both calling Guaita into action and Inaki Williams twice firing just wide.
Juan Cala went close for the visitors, as did Benat Etxebarria and Williams for the home side in the aftermath of Jimenez's premature departure, but Getafe saw out time to snatch their point.
