Swiss side sunk by brace of free-kicks

Fernandinho's stunning free-kick set Shakhtar Dontesk on their way to victory over Basle their UEFA Champions League Group C clash in Switzerland. The Brazilian midfielder lashed home a curling 30-yard effort that seemed to gather speed as it flew beyond Franco Costanzo and into the back of the net with 25 minutes on the clock. And compatriot Jadson made it 2-0 just before the interval with another dead-ball, although Costanzo should have done better on this occasion. Mircea Lucescu's visitors made a bright start at St Jakob-Park and created the majority of the early opportunities, with Fernandinho firing just over the bar with an early sighter. Darijo Srna then played a dangerous ball towards the near post but Luiz Adriano was on his heels and allowed the chance to escape. Basle's best chance came when Eren Derdiyok showed quick feet on the edge of the box to create a shooting opportunity for himself, but fired over the bar. Then in the 25th minute Francois Marque brought down Adriano, giving Fernandinho the opportunity to launch his rocket into the back of the net.

      Vicious

And on the stroke of half-time Reto Zanni was penalised for handball on the corner of his own box, with Jadson's wicked curling free-kick beating everyone and skipping viciously off the turf to evade Costanzo. Christian Gross' men attempted to find their way back into the match and came close to reducing the deficit when Carlitos' deft curling cross was fired just wide by substitute Eduardo. Shakhtar then had a goal disallowed when Brandao followed up to convert after Tomas Hubschman's powerful shot squirmed away from Costanzo, but the flag was correctly raised for offside. The Basle skipper then made a superb stop in the 66th minute, diving low to his left to push Vyacheslav Shevchuk's powerful shot against the post before pouncing on the rebound. And he had to be alert again shortly afterwards as Jadson attempted to catch him out with a third free-kick, which the goalkeeper had to leap and push over the bar. Basle grabbed a consolation goal in the dying seconds as David Abraham sneaked in at the far post to stab home Carlitos' deep cross.
