Ribery bags brace as German champions look good for last 16

Franck Ribery bagged a brace as Bayern Munich capped their Group E campaign with a 3-0 win over Basle. The Swiss visitors had chances to take the lead as they chased the victory they needed to keep alive their slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knock-out stage. But Ribery opened the scoring with a 35th-minute strike for Bayern, who were already assured of going into the last 16 as group winners. Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, shifted back into defence for the German champions, then pounced just two minutes later to condemn Basle to third place and a spot in the Europa League's last 32. And French star Ribery completed the scoring shortly after the restart with his second goal - and just his third of the season - as last season's runners-up looked in fine form heading into the last 16.

A 5,000-strong away following made the trip over the border from Switzerland in hope of inspiring their side to a memorable victory and they made a positive start. Xherdan Shaqiri exchanged passes with Alexander Frei down the right before testing Thomas Kraft with a close-range strike, which Bayern's rookie keeper did well to save low to his right. The hosts gradually got on top with Mark van Bommel firing narrowly over from distance while Toni Kroos hit a 25-yard strike straight at keeper Franco Costanzo. But Basle replied with a 20-yard strike by Frei, which was turned wide by Kraft, before Shaqiri put Marco Streller through on goal only for Kraft to make a fine block. And Streller would rue that miss as Bayern took the lead moments later after full-back Diego Contento combined well with Kroos down the left. Contento then outmuscled Cabral to keep the ball in, draw keeper Costanzo out of his goal and cut the ball back for Ribery to sidefoot home, although David Abraham should have blocked his shot on the line.

And Basle's hopes were killed off within two minutes as Mario Gomez headed down Kroos' right-wing corner for Tymoshchuk to turn the ball in from close range. Basle coach Thorsten Fink, a former Bayern player, chose to bring Granit Xhaka on for Streller at the break, but within four minutes of the restart, Thomas Muller had pulled back for Ribery to sweep in Bayern's third. Costanzo pulled off a fine double save to deny Ribery a hat-trick and turn over a point-blank effort from Bastian Schweinsteiger. Basle should have pulled one back with 20 minutes left as substitute Federico Almerares blazed over after Frei caught Breno in possession. Yet Costanzo prevented the victory being more emphatic as he made another superb save late on to turn over a Gomez header with his left foot.
