Bayern concede crucial away goal in semi showdown

Lucio's own goal gave Zenit St Petersburg the edge after the first leg of their Uefa Cup semi-final meeting with Bayern Munich ended in 1-1 draw. The Russian champions now have the crucial advantage of an away goal after the Bayern defender's 62nd-minute blunder levelled the scores following Franck Ribery's first-half opener. Ottmar Hitzfeld's side will now have to find the net in Russia next week if they are to reach the final at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 14th. The home side made the majority of the early running, but had few clear sights of goal with Bastian Schweinsteiger unable to test the goalkeeper with his first effort. Bayern took the lead in the 19th minute after Ze Roberto was brought down by Fernando Ricksen as he burst into the area, with Slovakian referee Lubos Michel pointing to the spot. Ribery stepped up, and although his initial effort was weak and easily saved by Viatcheslav Malafeev, the France international was first to the rebound and scored at the second attempt. Former Rangers defender Ricksen was booked for his clumsy and high challenge, meaning he will miss the second leg next Thursday.

Malafeev was in the action again soon after as he kept out Ze Roberto's free-kick following Konstatin Zurianov's foul on Schweinsteiger, before having to be alert to deny Martin Demichelis. Oliver Kahn was then called upon to deny Radek Shirl, while Andrei Arshavin failed to trouble the goalkeeper and Igor Denisov saw his shot blocked as the home defence held firm in the first half. Bayern may have been missing leading scorer Luca Toni through suspension, but they continued to test Malafeev in the opening moments of the first half, with Schweinsteiger twice denied by the goalkeeper. But Dick Advocaat's men stunned the Allianz Arena crowd by levelling in the 62nd minute thanks to an own goal from Bayern defender Lucio. Viktor Faitzulin received the ball inside the Bayern area and his driven cross could only be headed beyond the perplexed Kahn by the unfortunate Brazilian centre-back. Kahn's evening came to a premature end through injury soon after with Michael Rensing brought on his place, while Christian Lell replaced Schweinsteiger. Lucio was clearly keen to make amends for his error, but was denied by Malafeev in the closing stages after Ze Roberto's corner, with Bayern forced to settle for a draw despite a frantic finish to the match with chances at both ends.
