Bayern Munich host Shakhtar Donetsk in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash

Manuel Neuer insists it is Bayern Munich's "duty" to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they welcome Shakhtar Donetsk for the last-16 second-leg clash.

The Ukranian side held the German champions to a goalless draw at the Arena Lviv last month and will be looking to give Pep Guardiola’s side a scare by scoring a crucial away goal.

However, history suggests Shakhtar have it all to do having never won a Champions League game against a German side.

They’ve also failed to score in their last four Champions League outings against German opposition added to the fact Bayern have yet to concede a single goal at home in the Champions League this season.

And Neuer is not looking at any eventuality but a home win: "The game simply has to be won, nothing else comes into question for us," said the 28-year-old.

"We like a situation like this. It's our duty to progress. To bow out would be fatal, but we are thinking positively."

Team news

Phillip Lahm has returned to full training after recovering from a broken ankle but is not expected to feature yet.

Javi Martinez (knee) and Thiago Alcântara (knee) are both still out of action, while Medhi Benatia  is a doubt.

The German champions will also be without the suspended Xabi Alonso, who was dismissed in the first leg for two bookings.

Taras Stepanenko returns from suspension for the visitors but they are still without Bernard (ankle).

Mircea Lucescu could also be without three of his full-backs after Sergei Kryvtsov, Yaroslav Rakitskiy and Ivan Ordets all missed the Metalist game with minor injuries, while Brazilian Alex Teixeira dropped out with food poisoning and is a doubt for the trip to Munich.

Shakhtar Donetsk are the biggest-priced outsiders of the final-16 second legs at 16/1 with Sky Bet to win at the Allianz Arena. Bayern’s failure to score in Ukraine does, however, mean that their visitors are far shorter in the ‘to qualify’ betting at 6/1, with a score draw (17/2) enough to see them through. The Bundesliga leaders are 11/4 joint favourites with Real Madrid in the Champions League outright, while Shakhtar are the second biggest price of those left in the tournament at 250/1.
