Diego Rolan scored a brace as Bordeaux ended the season with a win as they defeated Montpellier 2-1 in a perfect start to life at their new Bordeaux-Atlantique stadium on Saturday night.

Willy Sagnol's men finished in Ligue 1's top seven - with their sixth-placed finish - for the 10th consecutive season in a match watched by former player Zinedine Zidane as Uruguay international Rolan put the hosts 2-0 up by the break.

Montpellier, who ended their season seven points further back in seventh, pulled a goal back through Djamal Bakar just after the hour mark.

The hosts began strong and it did not take long before they got on the scoresheet as Jaroslav Plasil's wonderful pass released Rolan after nine minutes and the 22-year-old striker fired across goalkeeper Jonathan Ligali to become the first-ever scorer in the Bordeaux-Atlantique.

Two minutes later, Rolan went close again after latching on to Mariano's long ball but his deflected effort was pushed away by Ligali.

There was more decent play from the hosts midway through the first half and from Rolan in particular, who gifted Wahbi Khazri a shooting chance 25 yards out but the Tunisian's powerful effort was well kept out by Legali.

As half-time approached Bordeaux doubled their advantage when Ligali failed to hold on to Clement Chantome's 20-yard effort and Rolan was well placed to slot the ball into an empty net.

The second half got off to a slow start with no real effort of note until around the hour mark.

Bordeaux could easily have added a third had it not been for some superb goalkeeping when Khazri got through on goal after playing a decent one-two with Isaac Kiese Thelin, but Ligali did brilliantly to deny him.

Montpellier gave themselves hope after 63 minutes when some poor defending from the hosts gifted Bakar a free shot at goal and he took full advantage, confidently beating Cedric Carrasso.

Ligali continued to keep Bordeaux at bay midway through the second period, this time making a superb one-handed reflex save to keep out Thelin's close-range header.

With less than 20 minutes remaining, Montpellier went agonisingly close to levelling when Kevin Berigaud got in behind the hosts' defence but - after sending Carrasso the wrong way - his shot shaved the outside of the upright and Bordeaux held on to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.
