Jo Kuffour's 71st-minute volley was enough to earn Bristol Rovers a 1-0 win which pushes Northampton a step nearer the League One trapdoor.
The striker's deflected goal resulted from an error by goalkeeper Chris Dunn, who spilled David Pipe's hanging cross under pressure from Rickie Lambert.
Kuffour shot wide from an equally good chance 10 minutes earlier, while Scott Vernon wasted Northampton's best opportunity when heading straight at goalkeeper Steve Phillips after 23 minutes.
Jeff Hughes was also guilty of a bad miss for Rovers just before the break and the home side created most of what few clear-cut chances there were in a scrappy game.
The lively Kuffour was denied by a Dunn save in the last 10 minutes and was the most dangerous striker on view.
Adebayo Akinfenwa had a late chance to equalise, but like Vernon he headed tamely at Phillips from a cross by substitute Liam Davis.
