Late agony for Addicks at Burnley

Charlton suffered late agony at Turf Moor as Burnley substitute Steve Thompson scored the winner deep into added time. Owen Coyle's men finally halted a run of five Championship defeats on the spin to push the Addicks ever closer to relegation. The visitors took the lead through Nicky Bailey in the 41st minute, but were undone in the closing stages as Thompson levelled with 14 minutes to go before bundling home with the clock ticking down. Burnley handed a debut to Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams after he joined the club on loan until the end of the season. The Clarets began the brighter and came close to scoring in the fourth minute when midfielder Chris McCann hit a right-footed shot from 12 yards which drew a fine block from Darren Ward. However, Charlton were undaunted and Lloyd Sam drove a left-footed shot over the crossbar in the 17th minute.

Safety

Graeme Murty then drilled an effort goalwards from distance and McCann deflected the ball to safety. Burnley went close again in the 30th minute when McCann caught a left-footed shot sweetly and Charlton goalkeeper Robert Elliot did well to turn the ball around a post. Moments later Robbie Blake fired in a close-range shot from inside the six-yard box but Elliot again repelled the effort. However, Charlton opened the scoring four minutes before the break when Soares found space on the right flank and crossed low for Bailey to sweep home a left-footed shot from 12 yards which flew into the top corner. Burnley sought to find a response after the restart when Chris Eagles collected possession and drilled a shot over the bar. Charlton's Chris Dickson then tried his luck with a teasing 18-yard strike which required Brian Jensen to be alert. Chances came and went for both sides as Williams and Graham Alexander both went close for Burnley but Charlton held on relatively comfortably.
Punished
Burnley manager Coyle then brought on Thompson for Eagles in the 63rd minute, but Charlton almost doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute when Matthew Spring delivered a corner from the left and Darren Ward headed wide. The visitors were punished four minutes later when Thompson drew Burnley level. Paterson headed into Thompson's path and the former Cardiff striker hit a left-footed shot into the net from six yards out. Steven Caldwell then headed wide for Burnley and Blake drew another smart stop from Elliot but Charlton almost netted again late on when Spring's effort was blocked by Caldwell. However, Burnley won it in the 94th minute when Kevin McDonald crossed from the right flank and Thompson fired home from six yards.
