Bird secures surprise three points for rock bottom Cheltenham

Bottom side Cheltenham defeated Tranmere 1-0 to claim their second successive win at Whaddon Road. Skipper David Bird slammed home the winner in the third minute with a 20-yard left-foot volley as the Robins belied their league position. They went for the jugular from the off, forcing several corners and were unlucky only to go in one up at the break. Play-off-chasing Tranmere were not allowed to show their true form by an inspired Cheltenham, their first real effort on goal coming after 39 minutes when Ryan Shotton sent an ambitious overhead kick just wide. Striker Bas Savage shot straight at Scott Brown from 18 yards right on half time, but after the break the hosts went back on the offensive. Impressive teenage striker Nicolas Bignall had a shot blocked and it only seemed a matter of time before Cheltenham added a second. But they had to withstand a couple of worrying moments late on, Craig Curran having a header deflected wide and Anthony Kay heading over from eight yards for Tranmere before the Robins secured a seventh win of the season.
