Germans can qualify with win in Romania

Bayern Munich can clinch a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League by beating CFR Cluj. The German giants are on the brink of qualification after winning all three of their Group F fixtures to date and building up a six-point cushion at the top. Cluj, Basel and Roma are all level on three points so Bayern are in a position of such complete control that they could even make it through to the knockout stages without earning another point. Romanian champions Cluj will certainly be hoping that Bayern have allowed some complacency to creep in to their approach, and can take encouragement from their 3-2 defeat at the Allianz Arena a fortnight ago. Cluj took the lead in Munich before eventually losing and manager Sorin Cartu is looking for at least a point this time around. "We'll need a lot of luck to get a draw but even that would be a good result against Bayern," he said. Cartu will be without Gabriel Muresan due to a right leg injury, while Yssouf Kone is not in Cluj's Champions League squad after suffering knee ligament damage in August.

    Bayern news

Bayern will be determined to secure not only their passage to the next phase but also top spot, which could happen depending on the result of Group F's other match in Switzerland. Their build-up has been overshadowed by a war of words between manager Louis van Gaal and president Uli Hoeness, who accused the Dutchman of running a one-man show and overlooking certain players. Van Gaal admitted he was disappointed with the comments before the pair made up after clear-the-air talks, and Bayern can now focus on extending their fine run of recent form. "We are very confident - we're not even considering the possibility of losing," said Van Gaal, who has numerous injury worries to contend with. Holger Badstuber is out with a groin problem and joins long-term absentees Miroslav Klose (hamstring), Franck Ribery (ankle), Arjen Robben (thigh), Mark van Bommel (knee), Ivica Olic (knee) and Diego Contento (groin) on the sidelines.
