Colchester stay in the race for play-off spot with a 1-0 win over Grimsby
Friday 19 April 2019 19:35, UK
Colchester kept their League Two play-off hopes alive with a deserved 1-0 win over Grimsby.
Frank Nouble's first-half strike proved the difference between the sides.
Colchester dominated throughout, with Grimsby keeper James McKeown pushing away Brennan Dickenson's free-kick and Tom Eastman's header cleared off the line early on.
Courtney Senior's 14th-minute shot rattled a post and Sam Saunders also went close, before Senior blasted over from close range.
Colchester took a 25th-minute lead when Nouble slotted past McKeown from close range after Sammie Szmodics capitalised on Martyn Woolford's sloppy defensive pass to set him up.
McKeown saved Szmodics' drive before the break and early in the second half Jake Hessenthaler nodded Frankie Kent's overhead kick off the line as the hosts pushed for a second.
Colchester keeper Dillon Barnes pushed away Reece Hall-Johnson's cross and McKeown foiled Szmodics before Grimsby captain Danny Collins was dismissed in stoppage time after collecting a second booking for a foul on Abo Eisa.
