Colchester Striker Jermaine Easter found the net but was unable to prevent his side slipping to a 2-1 home defeat to struggling Hereford.
Stephen Guinan had given the Bulls the lead in the 29th minute when Lionel Ainsworth's corner was helped back across the area by Josh Gowling for the striker to smash home from close range.
Ainsworth then drilled the ball past Colchester goalkeeper Jimmy Walker from inside the penalty area after good work by Toumani Diagouraga in the 39th minute to double the Bulls' advantage.
Colchester pressed for a way back into the game moments before the half-time interval and Johnnie Jackson and Mark Yeates were both unlucky with shots that went just wide.
Easter pulled a goal back in the 71st minute when Jackson's shot deflected off Clive Platt and he lashed the ball into the bottom-left corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Hereford almost added a third late on through Ainsworth when he latched on to a loose ball from a corner but Walker was equal to the midfielder's shot and palmed the ball to safety.
