Crawley clinched a place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Cambridge.

A second-half own goal by Richard Tait and a late strike from Charles Banya saw the Red Devils halt a four-game losing streak. Cambridge threatened early on when striker Jayden Stockley, called up for his full debut, headed wide from a cross by Greg Taylor. United suffered an injury blow after only 10 minutes when skipper Tom Champion was forced off after a clash of heads. He was replaced by Liam Hughes. Crawley drafted in much-travelled striker Matt Harrold for his full debut and he came close to scoring after 31 minutes but put his left-foot shot wide after a pass from Gavin Tomlin. Striker Robbie Simpson drove over from the edge of the area for United, who came into the tie full of confidence following a 5-0 home win over Carlisle in the league on Saturday. Tomlin fired against the post for Crawley before the hosts went in front after 54 minutes when defender Tait put the ball into his own net after Tomlin drove a low ball into the six yard box. Midfielder Lewis Young almost doubled the lead when he fired narrowly wide before Banya settled the tie 13 minutes from time by shooting home from close range after a pass by fellow substitute Izale McLeod.
