Dzagoev and Krasic seal 2-1 win for CSKA

CSKA Moscow cruised to a 2-1 victory at home to Besiktas in UEFA Champions League Group B. Juande Ramos' men controlled the match for long periods and secured all three points thanks to fine goals from Alan Dzagoev and Milos Krasic, while Besiktas only registered on the scoresheet courtesy of a late consolation from Ekrem Dag. Both sides had lost their opening matches but the advantage was firmly with CSKA in the early stages as Besiktas struggled to get to grips with the artificial surface at the Luzhniki Stadium. The Russian side, beaten 3-1 by Wolfsburg last time out, made a rapid start and took the lead after just seven minutes when highly-rated 19-year-old Dzagoev drove a superb shot into the top corner from outside the area. Krasic crashed an effort wide from distance moments later as CSKA went in search of a second goal, while Tomas Necid also posed problems with some nimble footwork inside the box. Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez produced the sort of excellent left-wing cross Liverpool supporters witnessed only too rarely during his time at Anfield to create a chance for Necid, who could only blaze his volley high into the stands. Besiktas gradually gained a foothold in the match as the first half progressed and Igor Akinfeev was tested for the first time when he had to rush off his line to smother a Filip Holosko strike. Mert Nobre also went close when his ferocious long-range strike was tipped over by Akinfeev, while at the other end Gonzalez almost surprised flamboyant Turkish goalkeeper Rustu Recber with a clever free-kick that crept just wide.

Urgency

Besiktas were full of urgency at the beginning of the second period but Nihat Kahveci missed a glorious opportunity when he failed to connect cleanly with Ekrem Dag's cut-back. CSKA threatened on the break when Gonzalez delivered another pinpoint crossfield ball into the path of Necid, who again showed a lack of composure by firing over from 12 yards. But the hosts did manage to extend their lead in the 61st minute as Krasic picked up possession in an advanced position and skipped past Matteo Ferrari before drilling a shot home that Rustu will have been disappointed to let slip through his grasp. Rustu made amends with an acrobatic stop from substitute Elver Rahimic moments later but the momentum was behind CSKA, and Besiktas looked short of ideas as the clock ticked down. The Turkish outfit were also lacking quality in the final third until deep into stoppage time when Dag smashed in a shot after a slick move involving Ismail Koybasi. But it was too little too late as CSKA held on to get their Champions League campaign up and running and fire a warning to group rivals Wolfsburg and Manchester United.
