Augsburg remain in the bottom three of the Bundesliga with two games of the season remaining after going down 2-0 to Freiburg.

Augsburg failed to take advantage of Fortuna Dusseldorf's defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt as they remained in the bottom three of the Bundesliga with two games of the season remaining after going down 2-0 to Freiburg. Cedrick Makiadi's and Jonathan Schmid's goals were enough to get Freiburg back to winning ways after two defeats and allow them to consolidate their sixth position and consequent berth in the Europa League next season. With two games of the season remaining, Christian Streich's side are now four points clear of seventh-place Borussia Monchengladbach, while Hamburg missed the chance to reduce the arrears to a single point as they could only draw 1-1 against Wolfsburg. Alex Manninger prevented Freiburg from taking the lead in the third minute when he made a fine save to keep the ball out after his own defender Paul Verhaegh's attempted clearance almost went into his own goal. Sascha Molders missed a great chance to give the visitors the lead in the 10th minute, but he shot straight at Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Oliver Sorg denied Dong-Won Ji an excellent goalscoring opportunity as Markus Weinzierl's side started confidently. But it was Freiburg who went in front on the half-hour mark when Makiadi tucked the ball into an open goal after Schmid's shot was only parried by Manninger. Schmid almost made it two before the break, but Austrian goalkeeper Manninger got his fingertips to the ball to keep it out. The goal had clearly given the home team confidence and the second goal arrived after an hour when Schmid exchanged passes with Max Kruse to break through and beat Manninger with a composed finish. Schmid tested Manninger once again as Augsburg no showed sign of recovering, and the game ended without any real threat to the Freiburg goal.
