Grimsby goalkeeper James McKeown earned his side a point as he saved a penalty in the 0-0 draw at home to high-flying Exeter.
McKeown guessed the right way to save a Pierce Sweeney penalty in the second half and it proved to be a telling moment at Blundell Park.
Grimsby named an unchanged starting XI against their in-form visitors, who headed into the day on the back of a seven-match unbeaten run.
Genuine chances were few and far between in the opening stages, although Grimsby did go close when Wes Thomas carved out an opportunity for himself.
Lee Holmes nodded just wide at the other end, while Grimsby's Charles Vernam was unlucky to see his effort cannon back off the post.
Jonathan Forte also went close, but the sides were locked goalless at the break.
Forte struck the post with a snap shot after the break before McKeown came to the rescue with a superb penalty save from Sweeney.
Exeter are now unbeaten in eight League Two games, while Grimsby have taken seven points from a possible nine.
