Hartlepool grabbed a valuable 2-1 win against Tranmere in a game that only came to life late on.

Hartlepool grabbed a valuable 2-1 win against Tranmere in a game that only came to life late on. Pools were playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half but they failed to cash in. The best they could do was an early curling shot from Andy Monkhouse that flew wide of the far post from out on the right wing and a 30-yard effort from Ritchie Humphreys that was blocked in the Tranmere penalty area. Rovers were not much better at creating chances with the wind in the second half, but two quick goals at last brought the game roaring into life. Hartlepool took the lead in the 69th minute when defender Michael Nelson drove in from the edge of the area after great work by Ritchie Jones. But Tranmere were level within a minute as another defender, Ben Chorley, got on the end of a free-kick by Andy Taylor to loop a header over Arran Lee-Barrett and into the net. However, Hartlepool won it from the penalty spot when Antony Kay brought down Lewis Guy and Ben Clark scored.
