Hoffenheim extended their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season and moved up to second in the table thanks to a 1-0 win over Paderborn.

Kevin Volland scored the only goal of the game after Sebastian Rudy had missed an early penalty for Markus Gisdol's men.

The win - Hoffenheim's fourth of the season - took them to within three points of leaders Bayern Munich, who face the side Hoffenheim replaced in second, Borussia Monchengladbach, on Sunday.

Hoffenheim came into the game with an eight-game unbeaten record to defend and it looked like they would be in for a comfortable afternoon when the referee pointed to the penalty spot after only five minutes.

However, Rudy fired his spot-kick against a post, with Paderborn goalkeeper Lukas Kruse able to collect the rebound.

As has often been the case this season, Moritz Stoppelkamp was the source of most of Paderborn's dangerous moments, although he could not find a team-mate with a cross which was turned behind by Niklas Sule.

Elias Kachunga has provided most of the Bundesliga newcomers' goals, but he was off-target when he tried his luck five minutes before half-time.

Two good chances for Roberto Firmino could have given Hoffenheim the lead, but the two sides went in at the break on level terms.

Kachunga started to make even more of a nuisance of himself early in the second half before Stoppelkamp came closer than any of his team-mates to breaking the deadlock with a shot which hit the inside of the right-hand post.

That woke Hoffenheim up and, with their unbeaten record starting to look under threat, they took the lead.

Andreas Beck sent the ball in from the left for Volland, who turned and shot in an instant to beat Kruse.

Paderborn could and perhaps should have had a penalty with five minutes remaining, but the referee waved play on after Kachunga went to ground under the challenge of Jannik Vestergaard.

It was a let-off for Hoffenheim, who held out to claim the three points.
