Italians put to the sword as Germans complete Turin comeback

Bayern Munich came back from a goal down against Juventus to reach the UEFA Champions League knock-out stages as they romped to a 4-1 victory. The Bundesliga giants had to win in Turin to book their place in the last 16 and it looked ominous for Louis Van Gaal's team when David Trezeguet scored his first Champions League goal in over two years 11 minutes in. But when goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt kept up his miraculous scoring record against the Italians with a first-half spot-kick, the travelling Germans went for the jugular. And it was their front two that inflicted the decisive blows in the second-half as first, Ivica Olic gave the visitors the lead, then strike-partner Mario Gomez added a third before Anatoliy Tymoshchuk sealed the priceless result in stoppage time. Bayern now march into the next phase of Europe's elite competition as runners-up of Group A, while the Old Lady must now settle for a place in the Europa League after finishing third.

Early exit

Bordeaux, who beat Maccabi Haifa in gameweek six, ran out the unexpected front-runners in the group and it meant that Tuesday's showdown would see either Italy's most successful team or the highest decorated German outfit dumped out of the competition. Juve were without combative midfielder Mohamed Sissoko and defensive rock Giorgio Chiellini for their all-important showdown with Bayern while under-fire boss Van Gaal kept faith in the same side for the fourth consecutive match. Many predicted a cagey start to the Stadio Olimpico clash with so much at stake, but it was anything but as the visitors carved out two early chances when first, Bastian Schweinsteiger skied a shot on the edge of the area, before Olic struck the post. But it was the hosts who grabbed the lead in the 19th minute as Trezeguet rounded off Claudio Marchisio's delightful cross with a sumptuous volley to put the Bianconeri in a commanding position. But the response from Bayern was colossal and they were back on level terms 11 minutes later via the spot-kick heroics of their goalkeeper. First, the menacing Olic managed to wriggle into the penalty area and after Martin Caceres sent the Croatian tumbling, up stepped their penalty maestro Butt to send his opposite number the wrong way with the coolest of finishes. There must be something about playing the Serie A giants for Bayern shot-stopper's as he netted his third goal against the Italians and his third goal in the Champions League and it put the visitors back in the game.
Bayern juggernaut
Bayern finished the half on top and Juve boss Ciro Ferrara felt he needed to change the formation as he brought veteran striker Alessandro Del Piero off at the interval for midfielder Christian Poulsen. But Ferrara's tactics did not pay off as Bayern picked up where they left off and they soon had the lead they craved for when Olic pounced on a parried Daniel van Buyten header to slam in a 51st minute lead. Juve brought on attacking substitutes Amauri and Sebastien Giovinco in a bid to grab the equaliser, but the Bayern juggernaut did not subside and they had a third in 83rd minute when Gomez' poachers instinct saw him grab his first goal in Europe this season. And there was still time fourth as Van Gaal's defensive substitution Tymoshchuk showed he has an eye for goal as he drilled in a 92nd minute shot as Bayern finished with a flurry in what was undoubtedly their best performance of the season.
