Leonardo Ulloa's eighth goal of the season was enough to send Leicester City through and knock Newcastle United out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage for the sixth time in nine seasons.

Ulloa’s first-half header separated the two sides, and it could have been worse for Newcastle in the second half but for Jak Alnwick’s fantastic save from a Chris Wood header.

It leaves caretaker boss John Carver without a win in his first two games in charge, and Newcastle still without silverware since 1969.

Both sides made seven changes for the day’s only all-Premier League tie, and it was debutant Tom Lawrence who had the first chance, scuffing his effort after Newcastle goalkeeper Alnwick’s punched clearance.

Remy Cabella’s superb effort was ruled out by a late offside flag after half an hour, but it was the hosts who went ahead shortly after, when Ulloa headed Anthony Knockaert’s centre in off the crossbar.

Leicester continued creating efforts in the second half. A flowing move nearly ended up with Ulloa tapping in, before Matty James bundled wide after a good attack.

And it was very nearly 2-0 after an hour, but Alnwick superbly kept out Wood’s diving header to his right from Marc Albrighton’s cross.

Alnwick was at his best again to deny Jamie Vardy from an angled effort after the Leicester striker was put through by Knockaert, before defender Mike Williamson headed on to his own bar under pressure from Leicester’s Wes Morgan.

Newcastle's best chance came after 73 minutes when Cabella's free-kick from 22 yards out took a deflection off the defensive wall and flicked just wide, leaving goalkeeper Ben Hamer helpless.

The Geordie fans turned on their team late on and chanted for owner Mike Ashley to 'get out of our club'.

They had seen their team lose for the fourth away match on the spin and even booed the Newcastle players, together with popular caretaker boss Carver, at the end of the game as they came over to applaud the fans.
