Reds will make changes against League Two side.

Liverpool will send out a much-changed team when they play host to Northampton, the lowest ranked side left in the Carling Cup. The League Two outfit earned their place in the third round and secured a dream trip to Anfield after victories over Brighton and Reading. Despite their cup heroics, the Cobblers have been less than impressive in league action, with just one win to date from their seven fixtures. The Reds have also stuttered through the early stages of the season under new manager Roy Hodgson, with only one win from five, and are currently perched just one point above the relegation zone in the fledgling Premier League table. In their defence, the Merseyside outfit have already tackled Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City, but Hodgson admitted after Sunday's reverse at Old Trafford that there would be no title challenge from his side this term. A realistic assessment, perhaps, yet not one which will sit well with all sections of the Anfield faithful, and any murmurings of discontent will increase markedly in volume should Ian Sampson's side pull off a shock success. The two teams have only met three times in their history, twice in the league 45 years ago and once in the FA Cup eight years prior to that, with the Reds romping to 3-1 and 5-0 victories on home soil.

Team news

Goalkeeper Brad Jones and defender Danny Wilson will make their Liverpool debuts on Wednesday night. Australia international Jones has sat on the bench for four matches since his late-August move from Middlesbrough to become Jose Reina's deputy but will be given an outing against the League Two side. Wilson, who moved from Rangers in the summer, has also yet to feature for the first team but is in the starting line-up. Hodgson will make numerous other changes with many of his first-team stars rested, giving fringe players and reserves - some of whom featured in the Europa League victory against Steaua Bucharest last week - another chance. Northampton boss Sampson is likely to hand centre-back Ben Tozer a daunting debut following his arrival from Newcastle on loan. The 20-year-old should start with Dean Beckwith sidelined due to a thigh strain, while Abdul Osman had to be replaced during the second half of Saturday's defeat by Shrewsbury with a knee problem. Tadhg Purcell will be out for most of the season following an operation on his cruciate knee injury while Craig Hinton also remains sidelined with a knee problem. Midfielder Ryan Gilligan still requires surgery on an ankle problem and despite having been playing through the pain barrier, may be rested with Michael Jacobs a possible replacement. Marcus Hall will also miss out again with a hamstring injury.
