Highlights of Luton v Stoke in the second round of the Capital One Cup

Stoke progressed to the third round of the Capital One Cup after beating brave League Two side Luton 8-7 on penalties at Kenilworth Road.

The teams finished locked level at 1-1 after extra-time.

Following 14 successful spot-kicks, home defender Scott Griffiths saw his effort hit the crossbar, while Stoke sub Geoff Cameron made no mistake.

He fired beyond Elliot Justham to earn a trip to Championship Fulham, once managed by Stoke boss Mark Hughes.

The visitors gave former Barcelona forward Bojan Krkic his first start of the season after injury, and though Hughes made nine changes they boasted a team stocked full of internationals including Peter Crouch, Mark Arnautovic and Philipp Wollscheid.

Hughes' men dominated the early exchanges but Arnautovic wasted their best chance by shooting straight at Luton goalkeeper Elliot Justham.

Stoke's veteran stopper Shay Given was called into action after 15 minutes, turning Scott Griffiths' rasping left footed drive over the bar.

Justham then had to be alert to divert Jonathan Walters' low shot that appeared destined for the bottom corner.

Luton were threatening on the break, but Jonathan Smith curled well wide after great persistence from Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu.

After Bojan and Peter Crouch both missed the target when well placed, Justham was at his best to turn away a downward header from Crouch near the post.

The visitors finally showed their Premier League class in front of goal after 66 minutes when Stephen Ireland's neat flick over the defence was seized upon by Walters who calmly lifted his shot over the onrushing goalkeeper.

But if anything that spurred Luton on and then drove forward, with Given producing a fine double save to deny Cameron McGeehan and Ryan Hall.

However, with only seconds remaining, former Norwich midfielder McGeehan timed his run to perfection to convert Griffiths' excellent cross.

McGeehan came close to snatching an extra-time winner, but was narrowly off target after fine play from Hall.

Stoke substitute Mame Biram Diouf had a chance at the death but tried to punch the ball over the line, and received a yellow card instead as the match went to penalties.
