Cheltenham were deservedly beaten by Macclesfield, but the Silkmen only secured the 1-0 win in the 89th minute through Ben Wright after missing a host of chances.
Robins keeper Scott Brown was the culprit after he fumbled a low Lee Bell shot from the edge of the box allowing Wright to hook home from close range.
Brown had earlier acrobatically clawed Bell's penalty wide after Wright had been floored from behind by the clumsy Ashley Eastham.
It had seemed Macclesfield would never convert their dominance into goals with 18-year-old Vinny Mukendi taking an air shot at an open goal from just two yards out in the 58th minute.
Wright also had a golden opportunity before he scored, scooping a half volley off his shin into the arms of Brown from just 10 yards.
Lacklustre Cheltenham failed to mount much of a threat with midfield man Matty Thornhill going the closest, first in the 24th minute when he lashed a shot from the angle off the upright and then in the 81st minute when he saw a low sliding drive creep past the near post.
