Macclesfield failed to find a killer touch in front of goal as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Grimsby at Moss Rose.
The Mariners had the first two chances, Peter Sweeney seeing a free-kick tipped wide by Jon Brain in the fourth minute before Ivorian striker Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro bundled the ball into the net but fouled Carl Tremarco in the process.
Macc should have scored in the 23rd minute but Emile Sinclair fell over his own feet to waste an open goal opportunity.
Junior Daniel then crashed a free-kick off the upright for the Silkmen before Mariners midfielder Michael Coulson saw a 30-yard shot tipped onto the crossbar by Brain.
Grimsby were desperately unlucky not to grab a winner in the 82nd minute when substitute Adam Proudlock lashed a low drive off the upright, but Macclesfield too could have scored in the closing stages with sub Matthew Tipton putting an eight-yard drive over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
