A superb 85th minute strike from Perry Ng gave Crewe a vital three points in this game between two of Sky Bet League Two's bottom sides.
Ng scored the only goal of a desperate game with a 30-yard strike to end Crewe's wretched ruin of eight successive away defeats.
The goal was a rare moment of quality in a game of few chances.
Morecambe had the better of the first half with Kevin Ellison hitting the woodwork twice.
Elllison's first effort was a right-footed curling effort from the edge of the area in the 31st minute that hit the crossbar.
Nine minutes later the veteran let fly with a left-footed shot from a tight angle that crashed against the inside of the left hand post with Dave Richards beaten.
Crewe came into the game after the half hour and went close to breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Chris Dagnall was played in by George Cooper, but directed his low shot inches wide of the right hand post.
Eddie Nolan then drilled a shot from the edge of the box high and wide after a poor Patrick Brough clearance as the visitors ended the half on top.
Crewe had the better of the second half and experienced striker Chris Porter was guilty of wasting two glorious chances.
The first came when the loose ball fell perfectly into his path six yards out but he could only stub a shot straight at Roche.
The front man then turned a Zoumana Bakayogo shot over from close range when he should have done better.
The game looked set to be heading for a draw until Ng struck the all important goal..
