Evans suspended as Worthington looks for first win

Northern Ireland will expect a first 2010 World Cup qualifying win at home to San Marino, live on Sky Sports 3. Nigel Worthington's side, who came close to reaching Euro 2008, have made a disjointed start to their bid to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa. A 2-1 defeat in Slovakia was followed by a 0-0 draw at home to Czech Republic before Saturday's 2-0 loss in Slovenia, courtesy of goals inside the last six minutes. But San Marino provide the perfect opposition for Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, particularly as the minnows will also be the next team Worthington's men face in February. Worthington will be pressed into at least one change to his team for the game as Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is suspended.

      Defensive changes

Evans' absence could see Gareth McAuley moved into the centre of defence from right-back, with Chris Baird dropping in from a midfield role. Such a scenario would likely lead to Michael O'Connor starting in midfield, with Worthington missing Sammy Clingan and Chris Brunt. Linfield midfielder Michael Gault has been added to the squad, but Worthington wants to limit the changes he makes to his team. Warren Feeney is fighting to dislodge Kyle Lafferty in attack, while the national team's record scorer David Healy is searching for his first goal of the campaign. San Marino have lost both of their qualifiers to date after Saturday's 3-1 home defeat by Slovakia was preceded by a 2-0 home loss against Poland in September.
