Ipswich Town have signed Blackburn striker Luke Varney on loan for a month with a view to extending the deal to the end of the season.

Varney could make his debut in the Sky Bet Championship clash with Reading on Saturday after being brought in to boost Mick McCarthy's options up front.

McCarthy was a striker down after learning Noel Hunt had sustained knee ligament damage in midweek, an injury that could rule him out for the rest of the season.

The initial deal will see the 32-year-old join Ipswich for a month but an agreement is in place that the Blues can extend the loan until the end of the campaign.

“It’s a big blow for us and obviously a big disappointment for Noel as well,” McCarthy told the club's website.

"He’s been great around the place and he’s made his mark on the pitch as well. We’ll look after him and we wish him a quick recovery.

"Luke is an experienced striker who knows what the Championship is all about, as well as playing in the Premier League and he fits in with what we are looking for in a player. We’re delighted to have him here."
