Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan played 30 minutes on his comeback from injury on Tuesday - 19 months after his last competitive appearance for the club.

Flanagan started for Liverpool U21s against Fleetwood Town in a friendly at the club's Academy complex in Kirkby, a match which ended goalless.

The 22-year-old produced a solid display in his pre-arranged half-an-hour of action before making way for Kristof Polgar.

Flanagan returned to full training earlier this month following a nightmare spell that has seen him undergo two separate major operations on his left knee.

His only appearances in that time have been two friendly games, against Brondby in July 2014 and a charity match in March.

Flanagan was a key player in Liverpool's title challenge during the 2013-14 campaign and his form saw him rewarded with an England cap against Ecuador ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Jose Enrique also started the match against Fleetwood and played the entire 90 minutes following a recent hamstring problem.
