Last season's runners-up RB Leipzig began their second season in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 defeat at Schalke.
New Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco enjoyed a victory in his Bundesliga debut, with the hosts able to control the majority of the contest.
Last season's Bundesliga runners-up RB Leipzig were unable to pick up where they left off last term, with ex-Spurs man Nabil Bentaleb showing no mercy from the spot to hand his side the lead just before the break.
And when Amine Harit laid on a neat through-ball midway through the second half, Yevhen Konoplyanka did the rest, curling home in style to seal the victory.
Borussia Dortmund matched champions Bayern Munich's result on Friday evening as they beat Wolfsburg 3-0 at the Volkswagen Arena.
Two goals in five first-half minutes from in-demand Christian Pulisic and Marc Bartra gave Dortmund a commanding lead at the break, before equally as in-demand Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the win on the hour mark.
Last season's fourth-placed side Hoffenheim recovered from their midweek Champions League qualifying defeat to Liverpool to record a narrow 1-0 win over Werder Bremen, Andrej Kramaric with the 84th minute winner.
Elsewhere, newly promoted Hannover started with a win over Mainz, but Hertha Berlin's Mathew Leckie grabbed a brace to ensure Stuttgart's return to the top-flight ended in defeat.
Nicolai Muller's eighth-minute goal was enough to earn Hamburg a slender 1-0 victory at home to FC Augsburg.
