Ally McCoist and Paul Heckingbottom are among the names being considered for the vacant Sunderland manager's job, Sky Sports News understands.

The club, rooted to the foot of the Sky Bet Championship with just one win in 16 league games this season, have already held interviews, but are thought to be keen to take their time and ensure they do their homework over the appointment to ensure they find the right man to turn things around.

It's understood McCoist and Barnsley manager Heckingbottom are two of a group being considered, but it's unclear whether either has been interviewed for the post.

McCoist worked alongside Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain when the former was Rangers manager from 2011-2014.

Black Cats legends Peter Reid and Kevin Phillips are also thought to be popular choices among supporters.

Robbie Stockdale is now in sole caretaker charge after his fellow caretaker Billy McKinlay left to join David Moyes at West Ham on Sunday.
