Romain Alessandrini scored the only goal after 82 minutes as Los Angeles Galaxy beat San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in the California Clasico.
Los Angeles managed to avoid losing its fourth straight MLS home game for the first time since 2006 with the win. San Jose have only won one away game since beating the Galaxy last August.
Alessandrini's strike from distance was Los Angeles' first shot on goal. San Jose forward Danny Hoesen had a great chance to level, but his shot was tipped onto the crossbar by LA Galaxy keeper David Bingham.
Alberth Elis scored his seventh goal of the season to help Houston beat New York City 3-1.
Alejandro Fuenmayor and Tomas Martinez also scored for Houston, while David Villa got a consolation for NYC.
Maxi Urruti scored early and goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez made a string of saves as FC Dallas hung on to defeat Toronto FC 1-0, extending the MLS champions' early-season misery.
Gonzalez got a hand to a Jonathan Osorio shot to preserve the win as seven minutes of added time made for a wild finale.
Toronto dominated long stretches of the game but were unable to find a way past Gonzalez. Dallas battened down the hatches in the second half and did what it could to slow down the game, with players going down to deny the home side momentum.
