Sky Bet League Two leaders Lincoln suffered a 1-0 defeat at Tranmere on Tuesday night as Exeter closed the gap at the top of the table down to two points.
Danny Cowley's men had been on the back of a three-match winning run, but James Norwood's goal on the hour, before his late sending off, proved enough to give Rovers victory.
Exeter took full advantage to move up from third and above Newport - who drew 3-3 home to struggling Macclesfield - after a 1-0 win over Stevenage. Macclesfield remained bottom despite their surprise point at Newport, who equalised deep into stoppage time through Jamille Matt.
Notts County continued their upturn in form with a second straight win after beating Crawley 3-1, despite ending the game with 10 men. New Northampton boss Keith Curle saw his side labour to a 0-0 home draw against Bury.
Chuks Aneke and Kieran Agard scored in the first half as MK Dons won 2-0 at Port Vale.
