It was only Man City's second Premier League win in the last nine meetings with Liverpool, the other was the 5-0 in September 2017. Meanwhile, Liverpool have a poor record in January - which was added to on Monday night - with their last 19 matches in all competitions in the month producing only five wins.
Sergio Aguero has now scored in all seven Premier League home appearances against Liverpool and that is the best 100 per cent home scoring record for any player against any opponent in Premier League history.
David Silva equalled Joe Hart's club record of 266 Premier League appearances for City and the Spaniard could break the record at home to Wolves on Monday Night Football.
Leroy Sane has now scored four goals in five Premier League appearances against Liverpool, the most he has scored against any Premier League opponent. Before Thursday's match, the Germany international had three against Arsenal and West Ham, but that was only his second win over the Reds after scoring twice in City's 5-0 home win when he came on as a sub at the Etihad and once in their 4-3 loss at Anfield last season.
Liverpool have now won only once in their last 10 Premier League visits to the Etihad, winning once, drawing three and losing six, the solitary 4-1 victory coming in November 2015, just over a month after Jurgen Klopp was appointed.
In 11 career appearances, Roberto Firmino now has five goals against City and he has started all 11 appearances against them since joining Liverpool, including the 2016 League Cup final.
The forward has now scored 44 Premier League goals, extending his lead as the top-scoring Brazilian in Premier League history, overtaking Philippe Coutinho (41) with his recent hat-trick against Arsenal.

MARTIN SAYS: The Argentine has faced Manchester United 12 times in the Premier League as a manager of both Southampton and Spurs, winning four times and losing on five occasions, with a win percentage of 33 per cent.
Those four victories, all while in charge of the north London club, came in April 2016 (3-0), May 2017 (2-1) - the final game at White Hart Lane - January 2018 (2-0) and August this season (3-0).
It will also be just the second time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed a team against Tottenham - the first being a 1-0 defeat with Cardiff in March 2014 - but if his record against them as a player is anything to go by, then United might be in for a fruitful afternoon. In 11 Premier League encounters against Spurs, Solskjaer came out on the winning side nine times, scoring seven goals - and only one of them off the bench!
The Norwegian only scored more goals against West Ham and Nottingham Forest (both eight) during his time in the English top flight. It's worth noting that beating Spurs this weekend would give Solskjaer the honour of being the only United manager to win his first six matches in charge of the club.

MARTIN SAYS: If red cards were dished out at the current rate for the remainder of this campaign, the end of season tally would still fall short of the record (72).
The sendings-off of Robbie Brady and Christopher Schindler in Burnley's 2-1 win over Huddersfield last Wednesday mean the total number of red cards over the campaign so far stands at 31, which is almost as many as was awarded last season. Leicester City have picked up four of those, while Brighton, Huddersfield and Manchester United have all seen red three times.
Last season, the figures dropped dramatically as there were just 39 over the course of the campaign. This is well below the average and 33 less than the record number of red cards (72) brandished in the 1998/99, 2002/03 and the 2005/06 seasons.
I read that Bernardo Silva covered an amazing 13.7km in Manchester City's win over Liverpool. Is that the most by a player this season? Freddy, Manchester
MARTIN SAYS: His industrious showing in the 2-1 win was the joint-highest distance covered by a single player, matching his own record of 13.7km set against Tottenham in City's win at Wembley earlier this season. The energy he showed was also backed up by his interception count, which was the most completed by any player in that classic encounter at the Etihad. Plus, he assisted the opening goal for Sergio Aguero as well!
When looking at the top 10 for distance covered, Chelsea midfielder Jorginho appears twice having clocked up distances of 13.6km and 13.1km against Liverpool and City respectively. Christian Eriksen covered a fourth-highest 13.2km in Tottenham's win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, while Liverpool's Jordan Henderson ran 13.2km in that clash at the Etihad Stadium.
Perhaps not surprisingly, all 10 of those players are midfielders, who are expected to cover every blade of grass in the modern game.
