League One highlights and round-up: Bolton thrashed by Gillingham

Last Updated: 31/08/19 7:35pm

Bolton's first match since being saved from liquidation ended with a third successive 5-0 defeat to leave the beleaguered Trotters firmly rooted to the foot of the League One Table.

A Bolton line-up that included four teenagers proved no match for Gillingham, who had 30 shots at goal and never looked back once they went ahead through Connor Ogilvie's 27th-minute strike.

Hearts loanee Olly Lee marked the start of his second spell with Gills by doubling their advantage after drilling low past Bolton goalkeeper Remi Matthews in the 39th minute.

Brandon Hanlan tapped in nine minutes after the resumption, while Lee had his second when he finished from close range just before the hour mark.

The scoring was complete in the 76th minute when a Max Ehmer cross deflected off Wanderers' 18-year-old defender Jordan Boon and into the net.

There was positive news for Bolton after the game, however, as they announced the appointment of Keith Hill as their new manager.

Southend remain without a point this season, spared from being bottom because of Bolton's situation, after a 3-0 defeat at home to Rochdale.

Ian Henderson's 35th-minute strike put the visitors in charge before Aaron Morley doubled their advantage moments later. Callum Camps made sure there was no way back for Southend, scoring Dale's third in the 77th minute.

Ipswich moved two points clear at the top of the standings courtesy of a 3-0 victory over 10-man Shrewsbury. The Tractor Boys were two goals to the good inside 10 minutes when Kayden Jackson rifled high beyond Shrewsbury goalkeeper Max O'Leary, who was beaten moments later by James Norwood's penalty.

Shrewsbury striker Shaun Whalley was dismissed for a second bookable offence before half-time before Flynn Downes put Ipswich three goals to the good in the 69th minute.

Sunderland could have moved level on 14 points with Ipswich but suffered a day to forget, finishing with nine men as they were beaten 3-0 at Peterborough.

A goal in each half from Marcus Maddison either side of Josh Knight's effort stunned the Black Cats, whose day was compounded when Luke O'Nien was dismissed for a confrontation with Ivan Toney before Charlie Wyke saw red for a second caution.

Lincoln are up to second after Tyler Walker's first-half brace gave the Imps a 2-0 win over Fleetwood and Burton beat Bristol Rovers by the same scoreline thanks to late goals from Lucas Akins and Ryan Edwards.

Zain Westbrooke, Matt Godden and Callum O'Hare each gave Coventry a one-goal lead against Oxford but the U's battled back on each occasion through Jamie Mackie, Fankaty Dabo's own goal and Elliott Moore.
