Reds team-mate says midfielder is only choice to replace Terry

Jamie Carragher has backed Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard to be named the England captain. England are searching for a new skipper after John Terry was stripped of the role last week. A number of names, including Rio Ferdinand, Scott Parker and Joe Hart have been mentioned as possible candidates to fill the role, but Carragher believes Gerrard is the only man for the role "Steven Gerrard is the stand-out captain, and that's not a biased verdict," Carragher told the club's official website. "He's been the captain of Liverpool for probably a decade. He's captained in Champions League finals, Europe, big Premier League games. "He's also captained England in the last World Cup and he's one of England's best players. For me, I don't think there's a debate. "It should be Steven Gerrard without a shadow of a doubt."
