Supporters paid tribute to Emiliano Sala before Nantes' match on Sunday

Nantes paid tribute to Emiliano Sala on Sunday ahead of their first home game since the striker's body was formally identified.

The French club posted a video on their Twitter account of supporters paying their respects outside the Stade de la Beaujoire before the Ligue 1 match against Nimes.

They also published a poignant image from inside the dressing room, showing all shirts printed with Sala's name on - and his space left empty.

Before the game, a giant banner with Sala's face on it was draped over the centre circle, while the stadium's big screen showed all the 48 goals he scored in 133 appearances for the club.

A minute's applause was held before the match to honour the 28-year-old, as Nantes players walked onto the pitch dressed all in black.

The referee stopped the game after nine minutes - the number worn by Sala - as the fans applauded and chanted his name.

Sala scored his last goal for Nantes against Marseille in December, before leaving in January to embark on a new adventure with Cardiff City in the Premier League.

The striker had been travelling to the Welsh capital from Nantes with pilot David Ibbotson when the plane they were travelling in lost contact with Air Traffic Control on Monday, January 21.

The Piper Malibu aircraft was found on the seabed of the English Channel on Sunday morning and a body - later identified as Sala - was recovered from the wreckage on Wednesday.

Ibbotson, however, remains missing and the search for the pilot was suspended on Friday afternoon due to deteriorating weather conditions.

Nantes recently announced they will retire their No 9 shirt in honour of Sala, who manager Vahid Halihodzic described as having a "special relationship" with.

"He loved the club. He loved football. We will remember him forever," Halihodzic said.

"I have a lot of affection for my players as a coach. Working with him was a real pleasure.

"I lived with him for three or four months and everybody loved him, they adored him. I was a No 9. He was an extraordinary No 9."
