Ajax boss keen to keep hold of star striker

Ajax boss Marco van Basten has told Sky Sports News that the club have not received any offers for star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. The Holland international has been linked with a number of leading clubs, with Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid all reported to be interested. Huntelaar's prolific displays for the Eredivisie outfit have marked him out as one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe. But former Dutch boss Van Basten, who left his post with the national side after Euro 2008 to take charge at his former club, claims he has had no contact from any interested parties. When asked if Ajax had received any bids for their star striker, he told Sky Sports News: "No, and I hope that we don't receive them."

Van Basten admits that is not always easy to prevent Holland's most talented players moving on to Europe's bigger leagues, but believes they should always learn their trade in their homeland first. He added: "It's difficult to keep them. I think we have a good youth system, which is very important to Ajax, but it's been like this for the last 25 years. "It's important to keep players for as long as possible, maybe with money, maybe with other promises. "If they go after playing for five years in the first team of Ajax, that is OK. But now they are going at the age of 18 or 19 and that is too quick."
