Transfer news: Tom Cleverley to remain with Manchester United after deadline day mix-up

Tom Cleverley will remain at Manchester United despite Aston Villa and Everton making last ditch attempts to sign the England midfielder on deadline day.

The 25-year-old spent the majority of September 1 at Villa’s training ground at Bodymoor Heath, where a permanent deal was in place for him ready to sign.

However, negotiations broke down and a proposed move to Everton also failed to materialise.

The former Watford youngster has therefore been forced to return to Old Trafford despite being told by new boss Louis van Gaal that he is not in line for first-team football this season.

Cleverley is one of a number of players seemingly surplus to Van Gaal’s requirements, with Danny Welbeck potentially joining Arsenal in a deal worth £16million and Javier Hernandez moving to Real Madrid on a season-long loan.

Van Gaal did bring reinforcements on deadline day, however, completing the signing of Daley Blind from Ajax and a season-long loan deal for Radamel Falcao from Monaco.

Villa also made a late bid to sign attacking midfielder Sergio Canales from Real Sociedad but the 23-year-old rejected the chance to leave Spain.
