Juan Mata hopes Manchester United can use their emphatic 4-0 win at home to Queens Park Rangers as a platform to take them forward for the remainder of the season.

The Spaniard was on the scoresheet at Old Trafford along with compatriot Ander Herrera, skipper Wayne Rooney and home debutant Angel di Maria in a comfortable victory on Super Sunday.

And speaking to Sky Sports' Geoff Shreeves after the game, Mata insisted his team-mates must train well and try and put in a repeat performance at Leicester City next weekend.

Angel di Maria played a starring role for Manchester United as Louis van Gaal claimed his first win as United's manager by beating QPR 4-0 at Old Trafford.

“I think we played much, much better than in our first few games,” Mata said.

“From the beginning until the last minute we tried to score even more goals and I think that’s what we have to do with the players that we have.

“We have to play good, we have to score a lot of goals and be compact in defence.

“It (the win) was very important for us. Hopefully it’s the first step of a good run of results. It’s an important three points and now we must train hard during the week and hopefully we can win again next weekend.”

Mata presented club record-signing di Maria with the man-of-the-match award and translated for Shreeves who asked the Argentinian if his opener in the 24th minute was a deliberate goal attempt.

“He said he was very happy with his debut in his first home game,” Mata told Shreeves.

“And for the goal we’ve been practising during the week and he did the same thing in training so it came as no surprise.”
