Southampton are confident right-back Nathaniel Clyne will commit his future to the club, according to director Les Reed.
The 24-year-old’s contract expires in 2016 and he has been in open dialogue over a new deal with the Saints for some time.
Clyne is aware of interest from other Premier League clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea and recently told Sky Sports News HQ he was keen on playing in the Champions League.
But he has also stated he is happy and enjoying his football at St Mary’s and Reed, the club's executive director of football, said: "We’ve been talking for quite a while with Clyney.
"The manager Ronald Koeman made a comment that there was a deadline but that deadline was more about getting a response, and that issue has been solved by the fact Nathaniel changed his agent. We got an immediate response from his new agent.
"It's not our business but there was something there slowing things down. That’s all accelerated, I’m in discussions with his agent and those have been very positive.
"There’s bound to be speculation because he’s such a good player and has had such a good season, so we have to balance that against what he can do for us in the future and what we can do for him.
"We’re at a very good place at the moment in terms of discussions going on and I’m confident again that we will have a resolution to that sooner rather than later."
Speaking in his Thursday press conference ahead of the visit of Aston Villa, Koeman added: "It’s a taking a little bit longer than we were expecting in the beginning, because it’s true that Clyney changed his agent.
"But it’s the same story as Les Reed already mentioned. The feeling is good that we can keep Clyney at the club but we still need the signature of the player and we hope that will be next week."
Clyne said earlier this month: “I am happy to stay at Southampton. I am enjoying my football for Southampton, playing week-in, week-out and it is an up-and-coming club.
"My agent is negotiating, so I will just leave it with my agent and I am just going to concentrate on playing my football."
Clyne has made 39 appearances for Southampton this season, scoring three goals.
He signed from Crystal Palace in 2012 and has made over 100 appearances for the south coast club.
