Chelsea present Alex to the media
Chelsea have presented their latest signing Alex to the press, with manager Jose Mourinho having spoken of his delight at the closure of one of the summer's more protracted transfers.
The Brazilian, who moves to Stamford Bridge from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, has proved over the past couple of seasons to be one of Europe's more accomplished defenders and his manager is clearly enthused by his arrival.
Although Alex faces stiff competition to break into Chelsea's first team, given that they already have the likes of John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho and Tal Ben Haim at their disposal, Mourinho is clearly not worried by the prospect of appeasing all of his players.
"Maybe one of the reasons why we lost the championship last year was because we had not enough defenders," Mourinho told the club's official website.
"We lost Huth and Gallas in pre-season and did all season with Terry and Carvalho and a bit of Boulahrouz.
"We had no other solutions, not even competitiveness between them.
"There is no reason to be shaking like we were shaking last season. In this moment we have a good balance, we are strong in every position.
"I think if Alex wants an easy comfortable life he will choose a different club, if he wants to play at a high level he knows the squad is strong.
"It's the same thing, he's Brazilian, to play in the national team there's 6 or 7 more so big competition and Chelsea is the same."
Alex, who had been at PSV for three years while he awaited a work permit to enable him to play for Chelsea, has spoken of his relief at finally being able to move to West London.
"I would love to have joined Chelsea three years ago but it wasn't possible so I'm really happy to be here now," added Alex.
"As I said before there was a problem because of the work permit, but it was good for me because I got 3 years experience with PSV, but finally I'm here at Chelsea and I'm happy to be here and hopefully I'll help the team to win many trophies.
"The important thing is for me to be here, work hard and be prepared for the manager to select me for the team. I'm very happy to be here and hopefully I'll be part of the team and help them do well in every competition."
