Chelsea confirm defender can speak to Hughes

Chelsea have confirmed that Wayne Bridge has been given permission to hold talks with Manchester City over a proposed £12million move. Sky Sports revealed on Thursday night that the two clubs were already holding discussions over the England international. Bridge has found his opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge and has been forced to act as an understudy to first-choice left-back Ashley Cole. City boss Mark Hughes is backed by the financial muscle of the Abu Dhabi United Group and has been linked with a host of signings in the winter transfer window. Hughes is keen to bring up to five new players to Eastlands and confirmed to Sky Sports News on Thursday that he was eager to complete much of his business as quickly as possible. The proposed arrival of Bridge would bolster a defence which has leaked 30 goals so far this season, with City only two points above the Premier League relegation zone. Former Southampton player Bridge moved to Stamford Bridge in July 2003 in a £7million deal.

Good deal

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari admitted chief executive Peter Kenyon was handling transfer business, but insisted Bridge could head north if the price was right. "If they have a good deal, it is no problem for me," said Scolari. "But it is best you ask Peter Kenyon as he knows everything that is happening. "I have a meeting with Peter after training and I will ask him then about what is happening and whether we have a deal or not. "If any club wants to buy a player from Chelsea, they have to offer big money because if they play for Chelsea they are very good players. "When a club wants one player from Chelsea my advice is offer but don't offer less, offer big, because Chelsea is a very big club and has fantastic players." Kenyon has already made it clear to Scolari he needs to sell players before he can think about adding to his squad this month.
