The announcement follows Monday's appointment of Age Hareide as the national team coach.
Bjornebye will work full-time in the role and seems to have decisive views on how the national side should be co-ordinated.
He said: ''I will try to take care of the players and our relationship with the clubs.
''We must take care of the players we have; we must be positive and play positive football. We are too defensive now.''
Bjornbye revealed that he rejected the opportunity to start a management career with Tippeliga club Lynn, in favour of the national team role.
He admitted: ''There were two attractive offers for me. Both were just ten minutes away from the new house I have bought.''
Hareide has briefly worked with Bjornebye before, when he took the former player on loan at Brondby.
''It was there he made a good impression,'' revealed Hareide.
''Stig has a great deal of experience and a lot to offer. He is serious about his football and has a great attitude.''
