Scan confirms leg break for influential midfielder

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas will miss the remainder of the domestic season after a scan confirmed he had broken his right leg. Fabregas suffered the injury in the closing moments of their thrilling UEFA Champions League clash with Barcelona at Emirates Stadium and is facing at least six weeks out of action. The Gunners battled back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 following a breathtaking display from the holders to head for Camp Nou next week for the second leg of the quarter-final clash still in with a chance of progress. Spain international Fabregas sustained the injury in a challenge with Barca skipper Carles Puyol which saw the Gunners awarded a late penalty and the veteran defender dismissed.

Pain

Fabregas picked himself up to fire home from the spot in the 85th minute but was clearly in some pain and limped through the remainder of the match with Arsene Wenger having already used all his substitutes. The talented midfielder will not play for his club again this term but still has hopes of recovering in time to represent his country at the World Cup in South Africa. A statement on Arsenal's official website read: "Following a scan this afternoon, the club can confirm that Cesc Fabregas has suffered a small crack in his right fibula as a result of the collision with Barcelona defender Carles Puyol during Wednesday evening's match. "As a consequence, Cesc will miss the remainder of the domestic campaign as he will be out of action for at least six weeks."
