Paul Merson believes Arsenal still need to add a couple of players to the squad if they are to challenge for the title next season.

Paul Merson says Arsene Wenger must make Arsenal genuine contenders for the Premier League title next season..

The Gunners have been in fine form in 2015, losing just twice, and are battling with Manchester City to finish second in the table.

But despite their impressive run, they are still set to end the season some way short of champions Chelsea and Merson - speaking at a special 5-a-side game where Lewis Hamilton was taking on some of his Arsenal heroes including Thierry Henry - believes Wenger must bolster his squad.

“They’ve had a couple of good results,” said Merson, who joined fellow Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp on the pitch with the F1 star.

“I think the turning point was Man City away when they went up there and beat City well, but it’s got to change next season, they’ve got to be in the running.

“They can’t win their last 10 games of the season and still finish 10, 11, 12 points behind Chelsea – that’s just not good enough.”

Merson thinks Wenger needs to add to his squad and highlighted areas where he believes the current crop falls short of the all-conquering Gunners team of the early 2000s.

“They haven’t got a Thierry Henry or a Robert Pires, there’s no doubt about that and they definitely haven’t got a Sol Campbell,” Merson added.

“They just need a couple of players. I don’t know what it is, consistency? They’re that good sometimes you have to work a little bit harder in certain games.”
