Full-back fails to agree move to Pompey

Nicky Shorey's proposed move to Portsmouth from Aston Villa has broken down and will not go ahead. The full-back did travel to Fratton Park on Tuesday to discuss personal terms and undertake a medical. He was expected to agree a season-long loan switch to the south coast after seeing his place at Villa Park come under threat. The England international has been a regular in Martin O'Neill's starting XI this term, but the recent arrival of Stephen Warnock is expected to push him down the pecking order. A move to Pompey would have offered him the opportunity to remain a regular Premier League performer. However, he is said to have been unable to reach an agreement with Portsmouth and will now head back to Villa. "We spoke to Nicky, he came down and had a chat to us and we can understand his position," Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie told Sky Sports News. "He wanted to make sure he could get regular football here - so we could understand that and thought it best to leave it for now, but we might revisit it in January."
