Ross McCormack doubtful of Aston Villa return despite Steve Bruce exit

'I can't see it to be honest. That ship has probably sailed.'

Ross McCormack believes his Aston Villa career is over, despite Steve Bruce's recent sacking.

McCormack fell out with Bruce only a few months after he made a £12m move from Fulham in August 2016 and the Scotland international has been limited to just 20 Sky Bet Championship appearances.

The 32-year-old striker, who is on loan at Australian side Central Coast Mariners, made just 13 league starts at Villa before similar temporary moves to Nottingham Forest and Melbourne City.

"I can't see it, to be honest," McCormack told Fairfax Media, when asked if he expects to play for Villa's new managerial team of Dean Smith and John Terry.

"That ship has probably sailed, but it's hard to say. I've still got another year left [on his Aston Villa contract] after this season, so you can never say never.

"I'd probably be surprised if that changed something for me."

McCormack revealed he did not know Bruce had been sacked until 24 hours after it had happened.

He added: "I didn't even know until like a day later, with the time difference.

"It is what it is. That's the way football is these days. If you don't get results, you lose your job."

McCormack scored 14 goals in 17 appearances for Melbourne last season and is confident he can repeat that form at the Mariners, where he's playing alongside Usain Bolt.

"I've always believed if I play games, then I'll score goals," McCormack said.

"I don't think that will be any different here, but I think there's a bigger agenda here.

"I'm not really thinking about me. My career will take care of itself. I'm just trying to help everyone achieve what they've set out to do."
