Replacement for departing Downing and Young lined up

Aston Villa are understood to have made a £10million bid for Wigan winger Charles N'Zogbia. Villa have already seen Ashley Young depart this summer and with Stewart Downing set to finalise a move to Liverpool Alex McLeish needs reinforcements out wide. McLeish is a confirmed fan of the Latics star after he attempted to sign him while in charge at Birmingham. N'Zogbia has made no secret of his desire to leave the DW Stadium this summer after two years with the club following his move from Newcastle. It is now believed Villa have made their move and they will be hopeful of concluding a deal to secure his signature in the coming days.

Sunderland

Sunderland do look as if they could mount a rival bid after Steve Bruce confirmed he wanted a left-sided player. Bruce knows N'Zogbia well from their time together at Wigan and a rival offer looks likely. "If there's one area where we're maybe a little bit short it's a natural wide left player, but there's not many of them about," he said. North East rivals Newcastle, who were strongly linked with a move for their former winger, have already ruled themselves out of the running.
