David Prutton's EFL predictions: Newcastle to drop points, Brighton to win

David Prutton

David Prutton returns with his Sky Bet EFL predictions across the Championship, League One and League Two.

There's a big clash live on Sky Sports on Friday as Ian Holloway's resurgent Queens Park Rangers travel to Derby County under new boss Gary Rowett.

Championship promotion hopefuls Newcastle and Brighton are both at home, to Wigan and Blackburn respectively, while Fulham's play-off push continues at Rotherham.

(All kick-offs Saturday 3pm unless stated)

Derby v QPR (Friday from 7pm, live on Sky Sports 1)

Gary Rowett and Ian Holloway - the battle of the Sky Sports studio! They have both been good company and going into the game, Gary has had a decent length of time now to work with his new team.

He has a lot of good players but they have a few things to improve before they start picking up three points consistently.

As for QPR, I've been impressed by the way Ian sets up away from Loftus Road. He contains the opposition and maximises what he gets from his players.

PRUTTON PREDICTS: 2-2 (Sky Bet odds 16/1)

Reading v Leeds (Saturday from 5.15pm, live on Sky Sports 1)

There's a bit of needle between the managers and that's great. Jaap Stam has had a few words to say about Leeds' approach to the game and Yann Kermorgant questioned their reliance on Chris Wood.

Having said that, if you take 20-plus goals from any team that will have an effect.

Everyone has their own philosophy, though, and whether you are a purist or someone focused exclusively on results, it stokes it up a bit.

Ultimately, the result may be most important in relation to where the respective sides finish in the play-off positions. It should be an entertaining watch either way!

Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday (12.30pm)

Sheffield Wednesday have been fortunate because every time they stutter, Fulham do too. It's kept them marginally ahead in the play-off race but it's very tight now.

They face a tough test against a Barnsley team that has been excellent despite losing several key players.

I've played in this game and it's usually pretty tasty so I'm going for a hard-fought score draw.

Carlos Carvalhal is confident players returning from injury can help their promotion push

Aston Villa v Norwich

It will take some run from Norwich to make the play-offs considering the uncertainty that surrounds their managerial situation.

And I can't see them getting anything from Villa Park this weekend. Steve Bruce's side have been very good over the last few weeks and I think that continues.

Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness says Steve Bruce is starting to put his stamp on the team

Brighton v Blackburn

This won't be straightforward for Brighton. Blackburn have turned a few heads on their travels this season and have picked up under Tony Mowbray.

They are not quite digging out wins yet but they aren't losing either and they look much more solid now. That's a baby step in the right direction.

But I just think Brighton will have too much firepower for the visitors. It will be close, though.

Huddersfield v Burton

That 4-0 defeat to Bristol City was completely out of character for Huddersfield. David Wagner can probably only point to that game and Fulham away as examples of his side not turning up this campaign.

But I think he will move on pretty quickly and get them back on track against Burton, who have been punching above their weight week-in, week-out.

If they stay up, that's an absolute triumph, but I can't see them going to Huddersfield and picking up points.

Newcastle v Wigan

This has banana skin written all over it. Newcastle struggled at home to Blackburn, Bristol City and QPR, and you fancy Wigan will go to St James' and be really up for it too.

They are fighting for their lives down at the bottom and I'm sticking my neck on the line here, I think they'll get a battling draw.

Rotherham v Fulham

I'm sorry Rotherham, I'm sending you down this weekend. They need to win to keep alive their slim hopes of survival but Fulham are pushing for a play-off place themselves and will be desperate for the three points.

The London club have been very hit-and-miss this season but they should get something from Rotherham, who could then do them a favour when they face Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney admits he's waited a long time for a Scotland call-up

Millwall v Scunthorpe

Scunthorpe battled brilliantly against Bradford City and seeing that, I think it will be very difficult for Millwall.

The New Den is not an easy place to visit and I'm sure Millwall will make it a great atmosphere once again but I just fancy the away side to edge a close one.

Luton v Blackpool

Luton were understandably pretty cut up about missing out on the Checkatrade Trophy final and results since have reflected that.

For Blackpool, we have started to talk about them for the right reasons and Gary Bowyer has gone about his job in typically understated fashion.

That's credit to him and to Blackpool but Luton will be tough opposition. They should give themselves a bit of breathing space in the play-off positions.

PRUTTON PREDICTS: 2-0 (Sky Bet odds 9/1)
